The aim of the Laudare project is to comprehensively examine and study the Italian tradition of sung devotional poetry known as “Lauda”. This genre of songs was widespread throughout the Italian peninsula from the 13th to the 15th century. The Lauda, transmitted mainly orally, was a popular form of music that reflected the social characteristics of its time. It included lyrics composed by renowned poets and was sung to both existing and original music. By studying the limited sources that have survived today, we can gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of medieval society. This research represents an unprecedented opportunity for multiple disciplines, such as history, musicology, literature, sociology, anthropology and ethnomusicology. Furthermore, the laudistic tradition has direct links with local traditions that still exist. Therefore, further studying the Lauda would also have implications for local oral musical and poetic micro-traditions that are at risk of extinction.
