Industrial districts and cities in Italy: reshaping relationships in the knowledge economy

In the 1970s, during the structural crisis that hit most of the Italian industrial cities, the rise of industrial districts demonstrated that a different model of development was possible and would be extremely competitive. Today, in the knowledge economy, cities are again at centre stage, for they are the places where technological and market innovations take place and knowledge-based activities concentrate. Accordingly, the capacity of, and the possibility for, industrial districts to be interlinked with urban systems seems crucial for triggering mechanisms of endogenous development and for facing global competition

Negli anni ’70, mentre le grandi città industriali italiane entrano in una fase di profonda crisi strutturale, si affermano i Distretti Industriali, la cui nascita mostra non solo che un diverso modello di sviluppo è possibile, ma anche estremamente competitivo. Oggi, nell’economia della conoscenza, la città torna al centro della scena, essendo il luogo in cui prendono forma le innovazioni tecnologiche e di mercato, ed in cui le attività della conoscenza si concentrano. La capacità e la possibilità per i Distretti Industriali di relazionarsi alle città sembra giocare un ruolo cruciale per fronteggiare la concorrenza globale.
